i think it's important to understand the foundations of pretty much every meme we see today by differentiating between earnest and ironic memes. ironic memes have a monopoly on cyber culture today and has had some pretty serious real world ramifications. but i'll go into that later. i might also touch on why this has happened later on in the essay. but we'll see lol
what you need to know for now is that there are old memes which were made to be funny and silly, and ironic memes which were made to sow darkness among the youth. i haven't done any research but i believe the shift happened around 2012. before this approximate time, memes were... bad.

memes were really bad.
this is not to say that ironic memes are good. but my lord. i dont know what it is with shitty animals with bad english but this continues to be a consistent thing. in fact, it's probably what most people think of when they hear the word meme. unfortunately.

as i grew up, i watched the definition of irony change. at first this annoyed me, beause it came about through misuse, but language is fluid and ever-evolving so i had to let it go. the original definition was thus: "a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often wryly amusing as a result." the second, more recent definition is "the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect." as you can see, the second meaning is just sarcasm. but what they both have in common is the aspect of contrary and
